How do I know what bat I need?
This is one of the most asked questions. And, arguably, one of the most challenging to answer. One thing is certain, it’s highly unlikely that all members of your team are going to share the same preferences for bat style or size. Because of this, it’s important you follow certain guidelines (as well as your gut feeling) to make sure you are comfortable with the choice you are making.
To properly determine your bat specs, we recommend the following guidelines:
For size, we recommend going with the player’s age: starting from when he is 9, we suggest choosing a size 27. Then with each added year, we suggest adding an inch in length, until he reaches 14 or 15, he can then use a 32 inch-bat. After that, it all comes down to the size of the player and personal preferences. A taller player will usually go for a size 33.5 or 34 while a smaller player might stick to a 32.5 or 33.
When it comes to models, we like to guide players who are transitioning from metal to wood towards balanced models, such as the B271, RA13, B141 or JL18.
The reason for it is that a metal bat, while featuring a large barrel, is very light and extremely well balanced. Switching to a wood bat with a similar profile might mean a barrel that’s too heavy and hard to turn, thus impacting the quality of the swing.
After a while though, through trial and error, a player will determine whether he prefers a balanced bat for a more controlled swing or a top-heavy bat to feel the weight of the bat at its extremity.
Does barrel size matter?
Yes! Though barrel size is 100% based on personal preference.
Depending on your goals and skill level, you may opt for a small or a large barrel bat. While there is no right or wrong choice, each offers benefits and drawbacks. For starters, small barreled bats are typically more balanced and easier to control.
Large barreled bats, on the other hand, offer greater surface area and force. Depending on your skill level, you’ll either find large barrel bats easier to work with, as they offer improved contact with the ball or harder since they can be heavy and challenging to coordinate.
The best way to choose your barrel size is to test out both and stick with whichever size offers you the best performance.
